It’s Day 8 of our 10 day virtual fundraiser! Thank you so much to those of you who have stuck with us this entire time. We have been hugely blessed by your support and want you to know that each and every single one of you are precious to us.
For day 8 we are introducing a really great service we are in the process of implementing for not only our Star Valley community, but our surrounding ones as well. Here is DeAnna Starcer, RN, BSN, our nurse manager, presenting the Real Essentials program:

Azar House is excited about growing and expanding our services! We are currently preparing to reach out to our community with Sexual Risk Avoidance education. We have spent several months researching available curriculums, and after thought and prayer our board approved the purchase of a curriculum from The Center for Relationship Education located in Denver, Colorado. The curriculum is entitled “Real Essentials” and is geared toward High School aged young people, but can be adapted for middle school students as well. The Nurse Manager will be attending training on teaching the curriculum later this month and then will begin reaching out to youth groups, 4-H groups, and schools here in Star Valley.
Real Essentials is very adaptable and can be presented as a study over several weeks, or it can be beneficial even if the group is available to meet only once for an hour or two. It’s fun and interactive and covers topics such as Friendship, Dating and Love, Planning for you Future, and Committed Love and Marriage, and Sexual Health.
The following is a lesson in the Friendship, Dating and Love section:
The students are divided into groups, and using magazines, scissors and glue each group is asked to create a collage of what they think love looks like using pictures and words. After they’ve completed their collage, one person in each group presents their collage to the class and why they chose the images they did. The teacher then leads a discussion of the collages in the context of the 4 types of love in the Greek language:
- Storge-Familial love
- Philia-Friendship love
- Eros-Passionate love
- Agape-Selfless, unconditional love
Ask the students to compare their collage imagery with these definitions and identify what type of love the images depict. Allow time for the students to talk about how each type of love fits into their relationships and which type of love they value most.
This activity is one example of how the Real Essentials curriculum helps teenagers identify what a healthy relationship looks like and how to work toward and achieve that ideal.
Thank you for your financial support making this possible as all of our services are offered free of charge! Pray for us as we go out into our community with this important information!
